Learning to Observe Children
A Course Created by Mary O’Connell
Two weeks beginning November 5th
Zoom Q&A November 18th 6:30 pm Central
Rudolf Steiner spoke repeatedly of the need for teachers to develop a “relationship based on insight” and a living devotion that creates in us the ability to see “the things which matter” in the child. Along with nurturing a strong relationship, a keen eye for observation is what is needed to develop this insight.
In this two week course, we explore how and why to observe children from birth through five years old using the guidance of Mary O’Connell’s book, Observing Young Children: A Tool for Meaningful Assessment.
We will learn various ways to observe and record observations with plenty of practice and online support with Cynthia Aldinger. While doing so, we come to celebrate the individuality of each child while gaining an understanding of archetypal childhood development.
Program Details
This course takes place on Ruzuku, our online course platform, from which modules will be released Wednesdays Nov. 5th and 12th, and includes a free PDF copy of Mary O’Connell’s book! Each module takes a deeper dive into material that is covered in the book and is accompanied by an active two week practice of child observation.
In addition, we will join Cynthia Aldinger in an optional Zoom session on November 18th at 6:30pm Central to share experiences and ask questions about the practice.
This session will not be recorded. In order to cultivate a sense of togetherness and active participation, we warmly insist that your video be turned on during our live sessions. Please do your best to make arrangements so this is possible.
